DU Watch - a source for all kinds of DU information
1) WHAT IS DEPLETED URANIUM?
There's nothing depleted about it. It's Uranium 238.
To create fuel for nuclear reactors, the fissionable isotope uranium
235 (“enriched uranium”) is separated out from natural uranium.
99.8% of what is left after that separation process is uranium 238,
misleadingly called “depleted uranium” or DU. This substance
is not as safe as that name makes it sound. U-238 is radioactive waste.
It is radioactive. It has a half-life of 45 billion years.
Since U-238 is a waste product of nuclear energy producers, it is a
plentiful and affordable substance to obtain for weapons development.
2) WHY IS U-238 USED?
The high density and hardness of U-238 makes it a tempting ingredient
for tank armor and munitions manufacturing. U-238 is also a pyphoric
-- it burns spontaneously upon impact.
3) WHY SHOULDN’T U-238 BE USED IN WEAPONS?
When U-238 munitions burn, they release tiny ceramic aerosols -- uranium
oxide particles which are small enough to be inhaled and which emit
alpha, beta and gamma radiation. The particles that are not inhaled
by humans or animals can travel long distances in the air, eventually
settling on surfaces — perhaps on a child’s toy or or a
piece of food or a body of water. No matter where they land, these particles
are radioactive and will continue to poison anyone who comes into contact
with them. For 45 billion years.
4) WHAT DOES U-238 DO TO THOSE EXPOSED TO IT?
In dust form, U-238 is absorbed through the lungs and contaminates the
bloodstream with radioactive chemical poison. Symptoms of U-238 poisoning
range from fatigue to kidney failure to lymphoma. U-238 levels can be
measured in bodily fluids of the exposed party, such as urine or semen.
Unfortunately, the kidneys usually cannot filter out enough U-238 to
save the exposed party from cancer, but some of the poison does get
excreted — which explains why women who have intercourse with
a man who was exposed may feel a burning sensation and develop U-238
poisoning symptoms themselves; and which is why the offspring of people
exposed to U-238 are often severely deformed. Just do a google image
search: depleted uranium/birth defects. It’s too horrible to be
5) WHAT CAN I DO?
GET INFORMED. Read articles. Ask questions. Call
nuclear scientists, journalists, doctors, your congressional reps. Get
your questions answered and don't stop until you do. Most people don't
know this information because the media is not delivering it.
DEMAND REPORTING FROM THE MEDIA. Email. Call.
Send letters. Stage awareness events. Provide the media with information
to get them interested in researching this under-reported information.
EXPRESS YOURSELF PRIVATELY. Once you're informed, tell your friends.
Email everyone. Cause a stir in your own circle. Distribute credible
written info. Write personal letters to all your government officials.
Demand that the U.S. stop using and producing U-238 weapons immediately.
EXPRESS YOURSELF PUBLICLY. Organize with friends for local awareness
campaigns. Join or create a national or international U-238 awareness
campaign. Think structurally to get your message out. Attract the media
to your awareness events. Stage peaceful protests at facilities that
manufacture U-238 munitions. Stage peaceful protests in front of the
courthouse. The capital. I hear there's another anti-war march on Washington
on October 25th. Go there. Join the throngs. Carry signs that read I'M
AN AMERICAN TAX-PAYER, AND I DEMAND THAT YOU STOP USING U-238 MUNITIONS.
VOTE!!! We must elect new leadership to lead our nation out of the
business of war crimes. Volunteer for your candidate of choice. Ask
that candidate to speak out about depleted uranium munitions.
