We're organizing a two-tier approach to blanket NYC with Lysistrata readings all day on 03/03/03. Directors, playwrights and actors are welcome to work together in teams that will mobilize and take Lysistrata to the streets! We are actively seeking directors to participate and gather teams. Email Kathryn today to get details on how you can help actualize this plan.

If you've got questions, would like to write an article, or would like to volunteer, don't hesitate to contact us. We appreciate your interest.

Lysistrata Project Beginnings

The idea for Lysistrata Project was hatched in early January 2003, when New York actresses Kathryn Blume and Sharron Bower were inspired by Theaters Against War (THAW) to actually DO something about their feelings regarding the war on Iraq.

Blume had been kicking around the idea of a screenplay version of Lysistrata, and decided to do a reading in New York for THAW's action day, and to further explore the play for her script. After sharing the idea with Bower, the two riffed on each others' wildest dreams of what a terrific effect a reading (and then a hundred readings) of this play could have on the world as it teeters on the brink of the American-Iraqi war. Between squeals of excitement, they managed to get this website posted and emails sent to the many actors and directors they had worked with in the past. Those people forwarded it to people they worked with, and ... Before anyone knew it, Lysistrata Project had taken on a life of its own — snowballing into the first-ever world-wide theatre event for peace.

By its very nature, live performance fosters not only open communication, but compassion: We see ourselves reflected in a play, and the emerging human truths remind us how like one another we all are. Please join us: THINK GLOBALLY, ACT LOCALLY by producing or attending a reading of Lysistrata in your area on 03/03/03.
